Chinese device manufacturer Xiaomi has announced its first VR headset, which features interchangeable sleeves, to go on sale later this year.
In most ways, it looks and sounds just like the many other VR headset viewers you can already buy, but with more of a focus on allowing people to personalise their device with a custom cover. Rather than popping your phone in a plastic tray, like with the Gear VR, the Play VR has a zipper section to keep it in place.
It also has a button to let you control your phone while docked and an “anti-slip” strip to keep your phone perfectly aligned with the lenses, or so Xiaomi says.
The headset will play nicely with devices between 4.7-inches and 5.7-inches and will also pair with a Mi VR app, which currently provides content in China to beta testers.
Xiaomi opened registrations for beta testing the device on August 1, and had more than a million people register interest. The price of the unit, though only for the beta testers, was around 15 cents.
There’s no word on when or where it will ultimately go on sale, or how much it will cost when it does arrive.
While not a household name in western markets, Xiaomi has quickly garnered a huge following of over 160 million device users in the last five years.
